Background

Friends of Canon Gideon Foundation (FOCAGIFO)  is a Faith based  Non Governmental  Organization dully registered by National NGO Board ,Ministry of Internal Affairs with Reg. No  S.5914/4347 .FOCAGIFO  has been responsible in the  formation of UNERELA+  Uganda  Network for Religious Leaders Living with or personally affected by AIDS, ANERELA+ (  African Network for Religious Leaders Living with or personally affected by AIDS) which later translated into INERELA+ (International   Network for Religious Leaders Living with or personally affected by AIDS)  which has  10,000 members  in 48 countries working for positive change,  hope and justice for accelerated HIV & AIDS prevention to reach and sustain the three zeros: Zero New HIV infections; Zero Stigma & Discrimination & Zero AIDS related Deaths.

FOCAGIFO is also  among  the founder members of NAFOPHANU ( National Forum of People Living With HIV &AIDS Networks in Uganda ), and the  Global Working Group on Faith, SSDDIM and HIV  an interfaith  and ecumenical movement  of  people and leaders working for accelerated  HIV & AIDS  Competence at congregational and at National level  .FOCAGIFO established  the Hope Institute Transformational Leadership and Development- a youth training and empowerment institution  which has supported, trained  and  graduated over 900 youths (in the  Orphaned  and  Vulnerable Category) in various vocational courses and helping them to become productively employed, gainfully skilled, HIV and AIDS competent, social justice sensitive, spiritually empowered and environmental aware  leaders in their families and communities.

At present, FOCAGIFO has embraced a big vision of establishing Hope University Semuto which will engage students, lectures and researchers in holistic education and integrated training for accelerated HIV & AIDS prevention, management and governance and at the same time reducing household poverty, youth unemployment and socially sanctioned violence.

 

Origin

Friends of Canon Gideon Foundation ’s origin is traced back in 1992 when Rev Gideon Byamugisha (now Rev Canon Prof) who was the first Priest in Africa to publicly declare that he was living with HIV, came on a forefront together with others to reduce further spread of HIV infections especially among faith based communities.  The organization utilizes a unique model of friendship, collaboration and partnership with AIDS challenged persons, at-risk families,  vulnerable communities and their leaders and development partners to design and deliver messages , programs and services that build hope against AIDS every day and bring closer the victory against HIV and AIDS related stigma, shame, discrimination, inaction and mis-action (SSDDIM)

To reduce the vulnerability of individuals, families and communities living with and or directly affected by HIV and AIDS by defeating SSDDIM and multiplying SAVE working with and through the faith based community

 Strategic Objectives

-To advocate for the reduction of HIV and AIDS related SSDDIM and Multiplication of SAVE at individual, family, community and Institutional level

-To promote the capacity of Orphans and other Vulnerable Children (OVC) to become HIV & AIDS competent, spiritually empowered and gainfully skilled

-To Promote HIV & AIDS competence working through the faith sector communities

-To enhance the Institutional capacity of FOCAGIFO for effective programme implementation
